What is the Black Lives Matter movement?
Black Lives Matter (often abbreviated as “BLM”), is an international social movement protesting against police brutality and racially motivated violence against Black people. The movement began in 2013 when #BlackLivesMatter began trending on social media after the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. BLM has been nationally recognized for street demonstrations and social media campaigns advocating against police violence and pushing for policy change. Most recently, the movement gained additional attention after the worldwide protests following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police in May 2020. Black Lives Matter continues to fight for freedom, liberation, and justice.
