Oakland, CA Street Art

The city of Oakland has long been famous for its vibrant art community. An arts capital for California and the United States, Oakland residents can see the work of talented muralists and street artists simply by walking around the community. Since May 2020, many of Oakland’s murals have focused on depicting messages of racial and social justice.

After the protests following the death of George Floyd, vandalism left many downtown offices and storefronts with smashed windows and doors, which led to them being covered with wooden boards. Talented artists converged on Oakland, painting colorful, powerful murals demanding racial justice and police reform. The murals highlight racial justice and social justice themes like Black Lives Matter, police brutality, police reform, and civil rights, as well as memorializing figures like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis.

The murals in Oakland are ever-changing, so this online gallery is dedicated to capturing photos of these racial and social justice murals so they can be remembered!
